Wednesday filming locations in Romania: Bușteni and Sinaia
If you’re visiting the Romanian locations used in Wednesday, make Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni your first stop. Sinaia railway station is another location to explore, and the two towns are connected by train.

Nevermore Academy is in Bușteni
Cantacuzino Castle is the real building behind many exterior images of Nevermore Academy in the first season of Wednesday. The estate sits above Bușteni, with the Caraiman and Bucegi mountains behind it. The Gothic-looking school you see on screen is not an intact movie set: the production used the historic building, visual effects and other locations to create the fictional academy.
The castle itself is a neo-Romanian residence commissioned by Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino, completed in 1911. Its appeal is not limited to the series: the terraces and mountain setting are worth seeing even if you have never watched an episode.
The operator offers several ticket types for the park, gallery and castle interior. Do not assume the cheapest entry includes every area. Read the official ticket descriptions before choosing.
Wednesday filming locations you can visit
You can visit the Cantacuzino estate in Bușteni under the castle’s admission rules, admire the exterior and explore the publicly accessible grounds. Interior areas, exhibitions and guided visits follow the operator’s own schedules. There is no guarantee that a specific room matches a series interior: many school interiors were filmed elsewhere or constructed for production.
Practical expectations matter. This is a working heritage venue with changing exhibitions and events, not a permanent, walk-through Nevermore set. Promotional displays and special experiences may change. Check the official visitor page for the current options.

The Sinaia railway station connection
Sinaia railway station also appears among the Romanian locations associated with season one. It is a useful stop for fans because trains between Bucharest and Brașov travel through this corridor. It is a normal, active railway station, not a dedicated exhibition: respect passengers, platforms and railway safety rules.
From Sinaia you can visit the royal area, Peleș Castle and Sinaia Monastery. That does not make them all filming locations. Avoid online itineraries that label every attractive local building as a Wednesday set.
For an easy car-free trip, see our Bucharest–Sinaia train itinerary; if you are flying into Romania, start with the airport transfer guide.

Where else was season one filmed?
Several key settings were in Bucharest and the surrounding area, including the Botanical Garden and studio locations. You cannot assume these are open as filming attractions. Some are normal public gardens; others are production spaces or private properties.
Netflix confirms a crucial distinction: season one was shot in Romania, while season two moved production to Ireland. Treat lists that mix Romanian and Irish filming sites into one local day trip with caution.
If your main goal is the Nevermore exterior, Bușteni is the stop you want. If your aim is a broader filming-location tour, build it as a two-area trip, with Bucharest on one day and the Prahova Valley locations on another.
A sensible one-day fan itinerary
- Arrive in Bușteni in the morning. The train works well if you are not driving; from the station allow time for the uphill approach to the castle or arrange a local taxi.
- Visit Cantacuzino Castle. Choose your ticket based on what you want to see. Keep time for the mountain views and the park, not only the main facade.
- Travel to Sinaia. Continue by a train that stops there, or by car. Station photography should never interfere with railway operations.
- Finish with a genuine Sinaia attraction. Depending on opening arrangements, choose the monastery, the royal estate or a town walk. For November 2026 trips, Peleș Castle’s interior is closed from 2 November through 1 December according to the museum.
If you have children or prefer a slower day, do not try to combine the castle with multiple mountain cable cars. See our family planning guide instead.

Hours, tickets and transport
Cantacuzino Castle’s official website publishes separate fees for park-only, castle, gallery and combined access. At the time of review its individual adult castle + park product is listed at 65 RON, with a higher price for additional gallery access. These figures are not a promise for a future date: special events and admission rules can change.
The castle notes that guided visits in English may require advance arrangement for groups. If this matters, ask the operator before buying. The estate is at Strada Zamorei 1, Bușteni.
Our dedicated Cantacuzino Castle guide has more detail about the building. This page focuses instead on the filming story and a workable travel route.
Getting to the castle without losing half the day
The closest useful town is Bușteni, on the main railway line between Bucharest and Brașov. The castle is above town on the Zamora side. That distinction matters when arriving on foot: the route from the railway station is not a flat pavement walk. Expect an uphill approach, and verify the route before setting off with children, older relatives or luggage. A local taxi may be worth using for the climb, while a downhill walk can be pleasant in good weather.
If you are coming from Bucharest only for the filming connection, check the return train before buying your admission ticket. An expensive taxi or rushed departure should not be the surprise at the end of the day. Many visitors will find it more comfortable to stay overnight in Bușteni or Sinaia, then leave a separate morning for the historic castle grounds. A day-trip timetable works best when it is not built around a single fixed photograph.
Drivers can approach Bușteni via DN1, although traffic through the valley can be heavy at weekends and on holidays. The castle approach is distinct from the main road and parking arrangements may depend on events at the estate. Follow the operator’s directions rather than assuming the grounds are a free parking area. If travelling by train, combine the visit with the valley’s car-free transport guide for the onward connection.
Matching the screen to a real building
The silhouette is familiar: the turrets, terrace and mountain backdrop are strong visual signatures of Cantacuzino Castle. Yet it is important to separate three layers of what viewers remember. One is the historic exterior that exists in Bușteni. A second is the production’s modifications and visual effects. A third is the indoor Nevermore world, where other sets and studios contributed to the finished scenes. Visiting the castle does not mean that every school corridor, staircase or classroom is waiting behind the entrance.
This is a useful way to approach photography. Look for the building’s shape and the relationship between its roofs and the Bucegi ridges. The backdrop can be more recognisable than an attempt to stand in exactly the same position as a fictional character. Trees grow, exterior arrangements change, maintenance work appears and special events may restrict parts of the grounds. Treat your visit as a genuine cultural stop with a filming connection, not as a guaranteed replica of a television frame.
Also remember that the production moved countries for season two. Netflix’s own production notes describe the move to Ireland while retaining visual continuity with the original Romanian Nevermore setting. A photo of a second-season set is therefore not proof that the corresponding place is in Bușteni. This is especially important when searching for “all Wednesday locations in Romania”: many lists blend scenes, sets and seasons without saying which is which.
Places visitors often confuse with filming sites
There are spectacular buildings all around Sinaia and Bușteni, and they make a convincing setting for Gothic fiction. That does not mean they appeared in the series. Peleș Castle and Pelișor Castle are royal heritage attractions in Sinaia, not interchangeable stand-ins for Nevermore Academy. If an article claims that a landmark was a principal filming location, look for a production credit, a reliable location report or confirmation from the venue itself.
Similarly, the railway station in Sinaia deserves its own visit as railway heritage and a transport hub. You may come across the Royal Station building and other historic architecture nearby. An active station has areas where visitors may stand and areas reserved for railway operations. Never step onto tracks or cross barriers while copying a scene. You can get strong photographs without entering restricted space.
The film-location story is also different from the usual “Dracula in Transylvania” travel narrative. Bușteni is in the Prahova Valley, south of Brașov, and the castle has its own Cantacuzino family history. It is not Bran Castle and it is not in the town of Bran. Keeping those locations distinct prevents an unnecessary detour on a short trip.
Visiting with younger fans
A themed visit can work well for families, provided that expectations are sensible. Explain before arriving that the historic castle is not a permanent studio attraction and that the film production did not leave a full-scale Nevermore Academy exhibition in every room. Children who expect to meet characters or walk through every scene may otherwise be disappointed. Focus on the grounds, architecture, mountain panorama and a few recognisable views.
Ask the operator about current admission rules for children and whether photography, exhibitions or special events are included in your chosen ticket. Paths and terraces can be slippery in wet weather. Some rooms or exhibitions may be unsuitable for very young visitors, and accessibility can vary within a historic estate. If your group needs step-free access, contact the castle directly instead of inferring it from a general marketing photograph.
Bring a second idea for Bușteni in case tickets are unavailable or the weather turns. The town itself has mountain views, restaurants and a railway connection to Sinaia. An indoor café stop can be welcome after the uphill approach. For an entirely separate excursion, Urlătoarea Waterfall is a forest walk in suitable conditions—not something to add automatically to a wet or icy day.
Where to stay for a filming-location break
Bușteni puts you closest to Cantacuzino Castle. Look for a property that clearly states whether it is in the centre, close to the station or on the slopes above town. A low headline room price may not compensate for a difficult final uphill walk after a late train. Check the actual walking route, arrival time and any parking information before booking.
Sinaia is a useful alternative if you want a wider choice of restaurants and a second day devoted to royal heritage. You can visit the filming-related stop in Bușteni and return to a hotel in Sinaia by train or road. Choose the town that fits the rest of your itinerary rather than assuming “closest to Nevermore” must be the only accommodation criterion.
For a visitor arriving from abroad, an overnight stay can turn a rushed screen-location visit into an enjoyable mountain break. Read our town-by-town accommodation comparison and the airport transfer guide before committing to a location.
Questions to ask before buying tickets
Can you walk around the building? Check which admission product covers the grounds and park on your date; event restrictions can differ. Is the inside exactly as it looks on screen? No. The production used a mixture of heritage locations, film sets and visual effects. Is the attraction suitable for a very short stop? It can be, but remember the hill above Bușteni and the time you need to reach it.
Can you combine Cantacuzino Castle with Peleș in one day? In ordinary circumstances, the two towns are close enough by rail or road for a carefully planned itinerary, but opening hours and traffic decide how sensible it is. Peleș Castle’s interior is closed from 2 November to 1 December 2026 according to the official museum announcement, so that combination is not an interior-to-interior visit during the closure.
What is the most interesting thing beyond the series? The castle’s own history and its setting. Take time to read about the Cantacuzino family and to look across Bușteni toward the Bucegi Mountains. That experience remains meaningful long after a television trend has passed.
