Omu Peak and Omu Hut: hiking routes, accommodation and safety
Omu Peak is the highest point in the Bucegi Mountains. Omu Hut — known locally as Cabana Omu — stands beside the summit at roughly 2,505 m. Every normal approach involves hiking, and the return plan matters just as much as the route up.
Omu Hut reopened for the 2026 season
Public reports from June 2026 state that the hut reopened on 11 June under new management, with simple shared accommodation and food service. A sleeping bag was reported as required for overnight stays, and operation remains dependent on mountain weather and supply conditions.

What Omu Peak and Omu Hut actually are
This page covers both the summit and the hut because international visitors commonly search for Omu Peak, while the practical destination on the ground is often referred to by its Romanian name, Cabana Omu.
Bucegi Natural Park lists Omu Peak at 2,505 m, the highest summit in the Bucegi Mountains. The hut is immediately beside the summit area, together with the Omu weather station.
You may see 2,505 m, 2,507 m or slightly different figures in maps and older guides. These differences often come from the exact point being measured. For trip planning, the useful fact is that Omu is a high, exposed alpine environment where wind, fog and temperature can change quickly.
Omu can be approached from Babele and the high plateau, from Bușteni via Valea Cerbului or Bucșoiu, from the Peștera side, or from the western side of the massif. The correct choice depends on fitness, experience, season, weather and where you intend to finish the day.
Bucegi Natural Park ticket
At the time of this update, the park publishes a visitor ticket of 10 RON for people aged 14 and over, valid for 90 days; children under 14 are free. Treat this as dynamic information and check the official park website before your trip.
What to expect at Omu Hut
Think of it as a basic high-altitude mountain hut, not as a hotel. Space, supplies and services are constrained by the location.
June 2026 reopening reports mention shared rooms and bunk-style sleeping. Do not assume a bed is available.
The 2026 reopening information says a sleeping bag is required for overnight stays. Confirm the rule when arranging your stay.
Food and drinks may be available while the hut is operating, but you should still carry enough for your route and an emergency reserve.
This is a remote alpine hut. Expect much simpler conditions than in accommodation reached by road.

How to hike to Omu Peak
Times below are one-way unless stated otherwise. Add breaks, access to the actual trailhead and the entire descent. Never choose the route by ascent time alone.
Babele → Omu Peak
shortest common walkFor many visitors this is the most practical approach after reaching Babele. The walking time commonly published for the Babele–Omu sector is roughly 2–2½ hours in good conditions, but Salvamont does not publish that sector as a separate timed row in its Prahova table.
- The plateau can become confusing in fog even when the path is straightforward in clear weather.
- Do not build the return around the cable car without checking its operating status and last descent.
- Salvamont Prahova explicitly lists Babele–Omu among the winter-closed routes.

Bușteni → Valea Cerbului → Omu
classic valley ascentThe official Salvamont route climbs from Bușteni through Plaiul Fânului, Poiana Coștilei and Valea Cerbului to Omu. It is a long ascent and still leaves you with several hours of descent.
- Plan this as a full mountain day and start early.
- Poiana Coștilei is a useful point to reassess weather, time and group condition.
- The winter closure applies between Poiana Coștilei and Omu.
Bușteni → Bucșoiu Ridge → Omu
longer and more exposedThis official route passes Gura Diham, Poiana Izvoarelor, Pichetul Roșu, La Prepeleac and the Bucșoiu Mare ridge before reaching Omu. It is not the easier alternative to Valea Cerbului.
- The route includes rocky and exposed high-mountain terrain.
- Reaching Gura Diham itself adds time if you start from Bușteni railway station.
- Use only in a suitable weather window and with enough daylight for the full plan.
Piatra Arsă, Peștera and other approaches
different logisticsThe plateau can also be approached from the Sinaia side, while the Ialomița Valley gives access from Peștera. These are different trips, not shortcuts that can be compared only by a single walking-time figure.
- Do not apply the published Omu–Peștera descent time automatically to the reverse ascent.
- Road access to the plateau and cable-car operations are dynamic.
- For the Sinaia side, use the dedicated hiking hub to choose an approach compatible with your day.
Getting to Omu is only half the plan
A common planning mistake is to focus on the ascent time and leave the descent, cable-car deadline or overnight option unresolved.
Usually the simplest logistics, but you still need enough energy and daylight. Set a turnaround time before you start.
This can work well only if transport, train, taxi or accommodation is arranged for the other end of the route.
It helps only if you reach Babele before the last descent and the installation is actually running. Wind or technical decisions can change the service.
Do not continue late because you expect a guaranteed bed. Confirm the stay and keep a safe fallback.
What to carry and check for Omu
Even the shorter route from Babele stays above the tree line for much of the walk. Valley approaches require preparation for a long day and for delays.

In your pack
- Hiking boots with reliable grip and layered clothing, including wind and rain protection.
- Enough water and food for the whole route, not only the ascent.
- Headlamp and a basic first-aid kit even when you plan to return before dark.
- Offline map and saved route before mobile coverage becomes unreliable.
- A charged phone and, for a long day, a backup battery such as this 20,000 mAh Xiaomi power bank.
For exposure on the plateau
- Sunglasses and sun protection, but also a warm layer for wind.
- Use sunscreen according to the product instructions; a compact option is Riemann P20 Sensitive SPF 50, 20 ml.
- Carry food that survives several hours in a backpack; Solaris wholemeal oat breadsticks are one compact example.
- Do not replace a proper meal and emergency reserve with one commercial snack.
Check again on the morning of the hike
Check mountain weather, Salvamont warnings, the chosen route, cable-car operation if you depend on it, and the hut’s current services. A summer route classification is not proof that the route is safe today. In a real emergency, call 112 and give your position as accurately as possible.
When to plan an Omu Peak hike
Stable summer window
This is the normal tourist-hiking season, but afternoon thunderstorms, wind and fog still matter. Start early and keep a turnaround time.
Early autumn
Clear days can be excellent, but daylight shortens, temperatures drop quickly and the first snow or ice can arrive earlier than expected.
Winter and early spring
Several normal summer approaches to Omu are officially closed in winter. Snow, ice, avalanche conditions and covered markings completely change the character of the mountain.
Omu Hut and the early history of tourism in the Bucegi
A tourist shelter was established in the Omu summit area in 1888. The hut was later rebuilt and modified several times, becoming one of the best-known high-altitude landmarks in the Bucegi Mountains.
Its importance is not only its elevation. Omu sits where major routes from Prahova Valley, the Bucegi Plateau, the Ialomița side and the Transylvanian side of the massif meet.
The history is part of the attraction, but it does not change today’s priorities: weather, equipment, route choice and a safe return come first.
