For Sinaia, Bușteni, Azuga and Predeal, the train is often the simplest way to avoid DN1 traffic. A car gives you more freedom once you arrive, but the useful comparison is not just journey time: it is the station, the hill to your accommodation, parking, luggage and the exact place you want to visit.
Getting to Prahova Valley from Bucharest, Ploiești or Brașov
Sinaia is used below as a central reference point. Times are deliberately broad: different train operators, roadworks, weather and weekend traffic can change the result. Check the actual itinerary rather than planning around a generic average.

For an international visitor landing at Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport, the simplest rail chain is usually Airport → București Nord → Sinaia / Bușteni / Azuga / Predeal.

CFR Călători currently lists the airport rail journey at about 20–25 minutes. As of 11 August 2026, the published single fare is 6.50 RON. Check the airport train before you leave the terminal because engineering work can temporarily alter services.

Search for the exact resort station, not simply “Prahova Valley”. Sinaia and Bușteni have frequent relevance for tourists, while Azuga has fewer stopping services.

From the station to the places tourists actually visit
The distances below are approximate map-based walking distances. Gradient matters: two kilometres uphill to Peleș Castle is not the same journey as two kilometres on flat ground.

Sinaia station sits below the central park. Peleș Castle and parts of the town are uphill.
Bușteni · centre, Cantacuzino Castle and cable car
The station is central, but the main attractions lie in different directions and several involve climbing.
Azuga · centre and Sorica area
Azuga station is not at the ski base. In winter, a local transfer is much more realistic than walking several kilometres with skis or snowboard equipment.
Predeal · centre and Clăbucet
Predeal station is central. Clăbucet is walkable with light luggage, but ski boots and equipment change the calculation quickly.
Comarnic and Breaza: they also have rail access, but train stopping patterns vary. If your accommodation is there, confirm the exact station printed on the ticket and the onward transfer before travelling.
Travelling between the resorts without a car
A car-free trip works best when you choose one main base and add one carefully planned excursion rather than changing transport all day.

Sinaia, Bușteni, Azuga and Predeal share the same rail corridor. Check the actual stopping pattern and the return service.

Babele and the Bucegi Sphinx
For many visitors, the simplest mechanical access is the Bușteni–Babele cable car, followed by walking on the plateau. Jepii Mici is a difficult mountain trail, not a shortcut beside the cable-car line.
Caraiman Cross
The cross is a high-mountain objective. Walking time depends on the chosen route, and winter closures apply to relevant sectors. Do not add it casually to a cable-car day without checking the return.

This is a difficult, exposed trail with equipped passages. The Bușteni–Caraiman sector is closed in winter according to Salvamont Prahova.
Omu Peak and Omu Hut
Treat Omu as a full mountain day. Routes from Bușteni can take many hours one way; plateau access from Babele shortens the walk but remains exposed to fog, wind and rapid weather changes.
Do not assume that a technological road closed to public traffic is a normal tourist road. If a commercial operator advertises off-road access, ask what public or authorised route is being used and whether the vehicle is legally permitted there.
Parking: the town address is not enough
Town-centre parking, castle parking, cable-car parking, ski-base parking and hotel parking are separate decisions. Save one legal backup option before you arrive.
Centre, Peleș and mountain transport
These are different zones. Choose parking around the main purpose of the day rather than moving the car for every stop.

Is the train or the car better for Prahova Valley?

Can I visit Prahova Valley without a car?

How do I get from Bucharest Airport to Sinaia?

How long does Bucharest to Sinaia take?
Direct trains commonly fall in a broad range of roughly 1½–2½ hours depending on service. Driving can be around two hours in clear traffic but may take substantially longer when DN1 is congested.
How far is Peleș Castle from Sinaia station?
Roughly 2–2.4 km by a practical pedestrian route, much of it uphill. Allow around 30–40 minutes without heavy luggage, or use a local taxi/transfer.
How do I reach Babele and the Sphinx?
