The story behind Cantacuzino Castle
The castle was commissioned by Prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino, one of Romania’s wealthiest and most influential politicians of the period. He was nicknamed “the Nabob” and twice served as prime minister of Romania.
The official castle history dates construction to 1901–1911 and credits Romanian architect Grigore Cerchez. Cantacuzino also commissioned major residences in Bucharest and Florești, making the Bușteni property part of a much broader aristocratic building programme.

For Season 1, yes — as the real-world exterior location behind Nevermore. The castle’s façade and setting were used by the production and then extended digitally to create the fictional school.
The distinction matters because the building you visit is not a complete Nevermore set. It is a historic Romanian castle whose exterior became the visual starting point for the academy.
What changed in Wednesday Season 2?
Netflix confirms that production moved from Romania to Ireland for Season 2. Charleville Castle and new Irish sets helped continue Nevermore’s look, while the production design deliberately preserved visual continuity with the original Romanian location at Cantacuzino Castle. So: Cantacuzino is the Season 1 Nevermore exterior, not the principal Season 2 filming castle.
