The Babele and Sphinx hike is best understood as a plateau visit with several possible approaches. The yellow-stripe route described by Munții Noștri passes Piatra Arsă, Babele and the Sphinx before continuing much farther north towards Omu. If you are carrying water, a warm layer and basic day-hike gear, a 20 L hiking backpack is a practical size for many visitors, but equipment choice does not make poor weather or an unsuitable route safe.
For the full reference route, Munții Noștri currently lists 12.81 km, 5:30 h, 864 m of ascent and a maximum point of 2,507 m. The Piatra Arsă–Babele section is only part of that route and follows the plateau west of Jepii Mici. Because the source does not publish a separate official time for this section, this guide does not turn a third-party estimate into an “official” duration. For a longer day on foot, a suitable pair of boots and hiking socks matter more than trying to match an app’s pace.

Keep an offline map, follow the marked route and do not improvise a direction when visibility collapses. A whistle with compass can help with signalling in an emergency, but it is only a backup tool.
Strong gusts can affect balance and cable-car operation. Postpone the plateau visit when conditions become unsuitable.
Blowing snow, poor visibility and snow accumulation can make navigation difficult. Salvamont lists the Babele–Omu route as closed in winter. Do not treat a summer description as permission to continue in winter.
Two practical ways to reach Babele and the Sphinx
From Bușteni: the direct option is the Bușteni–Babele cable car. At our 11 August 2026 check, the operator published a first ascent at 08:30 on Monday and Wednesday–Sunday, 10:30 on Tuesday because of scheduled maintenance, a last ascent at 16:00 and a last descent at 17:00. These are dynamic operating times, not a guarantee that the installation will run in all weather. A compact rain poncho is useful for a passing shower, but it is not a reason to go up in unsafe conditions.
From Piatra Arsă: the walking approach follows the yellow-stripe route across the plateau. For sustained walking, a MH500 hiking T-shirt can help with moisture management, but carry insulating and windproof layers appropriate to the forecast.
If you plan to go up and down mechanically, keep a meaningful margin before the published last descent. A backup headlamp is sensible emergency equipment; it should not be used to justify starting too late.

Babele and the Sphinx are inside Bucegi Natural Park. At our 11 August 2026 check, the park published a visitor fee of 10 RON for visitors aged 14+, valid for 90 days, while children under 14 are free.
