Bucharest Airport to Prahova Valley: train, car or transfer?
Arriving at Bucharest Henri Coandă Airport? You can continue to Sinaia, Bușteni, Azuga or Predeal by train, hire car or private transfer. Here’s how the options compare and what to expect along the way.

First, choose how you want to travel
For Sinaia, Bușteni, Azuga or Predeal, the train is the sensible default if you are travelling light. You can make the journey without hiring a car: a rail connection runs from the airport to București Nord, the capital’s main railway station, where trains run along the Brașov line through the mountain towns.
A rental car is useful when your accommodation is away from the stations, you want to visit Valea Doftanei or your trip includes remote trailheads. It is less attractive for a simple weekend in central Sinaia because of parking and possible DN1 congestion.
From OTP airport to the valley by train
- Find the railway connection at arrivals. The airport operator currently directs passengers to the train station using the ground-floor Arrivals route because of car-park works. Follow the signs rather than relying on an old terminal map.
- Take the airport train to București Nord. The airport states a service around every 40 minutes, running day and night, with a journey of approximately 20 minutes. This is only the airport-to-city leg.
- Change at București Nord. Search for a train towards Brașov that calls at your destination. Depending on the service, stops can include Comarnic, Sinaia, Bușteni, Azuga and Predeal.
- Continue to the hotel. A hotel in central Sinaia or Bușteni may be within walking distance. For slopes, mountain accommodation or late arrival, check local transport or arrange a taxi in advance.
Use the national rail journey planner for the actual travel date and CFR Călători tickets where applicable. Not every service is operated by CFR Călători, and not every departure stops at every resort.

Driving from the airport
The usual route heads from the Bucharest area towards Ploiești, then north on DN1/E60 through the Prahova corridor. It brings you towards Sinaia, Bușteni, Azuga and Predeal in that order, although your navigation app may adjust the approach.
Distance is not the best predictor of travel time. DN1 can become slow on Friday afternoons, winter weekends, holiday returns and bad-weather days. Check live traffic immediately before departure. Driving after a long flight in snow, fog or heavy rain may be more stressful than taking a train.
- Confirm winter tyres and roadworthiness when renting in the cold season.
- Ask about cross-border travel rules if you also plan to enter another country.
- Check whether your accommodation has actual parking, not just street parking nearby.
- For Valea Doftanei, treat the detour from the main DN1 resort corridor as a separate journey.

Private transfer: when it makes sense
A pre-booked private driver can collect you at the terminal and take you directly to an address in the valley. It is especially useful when you travel with young children, arrive after the useful train connections for your onward trip, or stay away from a railway station.
Before paying, ask for the total quoted price for the entire vehicle, whether flight delays are covered, the waiting-time policy, luggage limits and child-seat availability. Avoid assuming that a price advertised for “Bucharest” includes airport pickup.
Use a licensed provider with clear pickup instructions. While the airport’s Arrivals car park is closed for works, taxis and ride-hailing pickups are directed to the Departures terminal; follow the airport’s signs and confirm your driver’s exact meeting point. We do not list an unverified fixed transfer tariff because prices depend on the vehicle, company and travel date.
Make the transfer realistic
Leave space in your schedule for border control where applicable, checked baggage, finding the rail platform and the connection at București Nord. Avoid booking a castle tour straight after your flight: delays at the airport or on the railway could leave you short of time.
When the main purpose of the trip is Peleș Castle, remember that its operator announces a temporary interior closure from 2 November through 1 December 2026 for conservation. Always check the museum’s own notices, especially for trips around those dates.

Questions worth answering before you land
Is there a railway station at the airport?
Yes. There is a train connection to București Nord. Follow the airport operator’s current directions from Arrivals.
Can I reach Sinaia or Bușteni without renting a car?
Yes. Make the connection at București Nord and choose an onward train stopping in your chosen town. Check the day’s service before you travel.
Which resort is the easiest base for a first visit?
Sinaia is a good all-round base for castle visits and local transport; Bușteni is attractive for the Bucegi foothills. Compare them in our where-to-stay comparison.
Buying the right ticket, not just the first ticket
There are two separate parts to a typical rail journey: the airport link to București Nord and the longer trip into the mountains. Search each part using the correct station names. For a visitor using an English-language search form, București Nord may appear as Bucharest North or București Nord Gr. A, while the airport railway stop can be displayed as Aeroport Henri Coandă. Check the station itself rather than choosing a similarly named neighbourhood.
Romania has more than one passenger rail operator. The timetable search can show trains from different companies; the website selling a ticket may not sell every train shown in the national timetable. The safest sequence is to choose the exact departure, check the operator, buy through that operator’s authorised channel and save the ticket or booking code before leaving airport Wi-Fi. Read whether your chosen ticket is tied to a particular train, class or seat. A ticket for one operator should never be assumed valid on another.
Allow enough time between trains for a normal station change. Buying an onward ticket for the first plausible departure after landing can be a false economy if baggage is delayed or the flight arrives late. For families, a later train with time for a meal and the station transfer may be the better choice. On a Friday evening or holiday weekend, check availability earlier rather than assuming you can always find the same departure at the platform.
The last kilometre matters as much as the train
A resort name is not the same as a hotel address. Sinaia, Bușteni, Azuga and Predeal all have rail access, yet accommodation can be above the town centre, beyond a steep road or near a ski lift rather than near the tracks. On a map, a hotel may look close to the station because the distance is short in a straight line. The actual walk can include elevation, stairs and streets that are awkward with a suitcase.
Before choosing accommodation, open its location on a pedestrian map and inspect the walking route from the station. Look for an actual footpath rather than a driving detour, check the steepness if your group has mobility limitations and ask the property whether a late check-in is possible. A hotel that is a little farther from the station but offers reliable pickup can be more convenient than one advertised as “central” without a clear route.
In winter, a taxi can be the sensible final step even for an otherwise car-free holiday. Confirm where a driver can stop safely: the pedestrian access to a train station is not necessarily the same as the car pickup point. Never rely on an unverified taxi price from an old travel forum. Agree on the fare basis before departure, request a receipt where applicable and keep the hotel’s contact details available offline.

How the season changes your arrival
In summer, visitors often plan the journey around an afternoon hike. A delayed flight and a long rail transfer can leave much less daylight than expected. Make arrival day an easy town walk and schedule any serious mountain trail for the following morning. Weather can change quickly higher up; a sunny airport forecast is not a guarantee of clear conditions at the mountain lifts.
Autumn brings shorter days, wet leaves and cold evenings. If you arrive after sunset, confirm your accommodation’s entrance and access arrangements before leaving Bucharest. Winter adds the possibility of snow, ice, strong wind and queues around ski resorts. The fact that the main road is open does not tell you whether a road to a remote chalet is comfortable for a standard rental car. Ask the host about the final approach and any equipment requirements.
For spring trips, melting snow may keep high routes hazardous even when streets are dry. The sensible distinction is between visiting the towns, which remain accessible, and assuming that the mountains are ready for ordinary walking. Look up the day’s lift bulletin and relevant mountain safety notices after you arrive. These checks can change which town is the best base for the next two days.
Should you stay in Bucharest or continue that night?
A late flight can make the airport railway look attractive because it runs overnight, but the onward train to the mountains is a separate question. Check the actual connection at București Nord. If your only practical onward option leaves the following morning, forcing a long overnight road transfer may not improve the trip. A night in Bucharest followed by a rested morning departure is often less tiring.
Conversely, with an afternoon arrival, light luggage and a suitable onward service, continuing straight to Sinaia can save you an unnecessary hotel change. Compare the total journey—not only the airport train—with your check-in window. A small child, bulky skiing equipment or reduced mobility can make one uninterrupted private transfer preferable even when it costs more. There is no single best answer for every traveller.
For a broader plan, use the comparison of resort towns before choosing your first night and the budget guide to count the whole travel day, not just the longest leg.
